Mission Trip to Cleveland
August 10 - 17, 2008

Watch the New City Video

This is a district-sponsored trip for individual churches to participate in. Each individual church is responsible for its own transportation and supervision of their students. If individual students want to go without their youth group, they can join with a group that is going.

Please see the following updated information regarding the District Cleveland Trip this summer.

30-Hour Famine -- Dear Nazarene Youth

Leader,

Of all the questions we get here at the Nazarene 30 Hour Famine, the one we probably hear the most goes something like this: "How do I get my students started on fundraising?"

It's no secret that teens are asked to raise money by schools and clubs and various activities in which they're involved. And while most people ideally should have a much easier time asking others for money to feed starving children than, say, for baseball uniforms, it's still hard to approach strangers and ask them to part with their cash. But we've tried to do two things to make it easier for students to raise funds and for you to help give them additional motivation.

  1. Rewards. We are often asked why we offer rewards for fundraising when we're trying to help provide food and care for vulnerable children. While it may seem contradictory, the fact is that most teens have been taught that rewards are a part of fundraising. And Famine history bears this out. When we've cut back on some rewards, our fundraising has immediately suffered. More children are helped when we offer rewards than when we don't.

Beyond that, it gives students a tangible reminder of what they've done to help make the world a better place. Each reward level is based on how many months they've helped feed and care for a child, so the rewards can act as a powerful motivator for teens' fundraising efforts.

Visit the Web site to review what rewards are available, or see page 32 in the Leaders Guide.
  1. The Nazarene Study Tour. It's one experience to raise money and know you're helping to feed children. It's another experience entirely to meet some of those children face-to-face, especially when you're meeting them in Malawi, Africa. That's the opportunity you and a few of your students have through the Nazarene 30 Hour Famine Study Tour. The full details of how to qualify are on our Web site, but the biggest goal is for one or more of the students in your groups to raise at least $360 — enough to help feed and care for a child for a year. When they do, they are eligible to apply for the trip, and so are you.

Get more information about the Nazarene Study Tour on the Web site.

Hopefully these incentives will act as additional motivators for your teens' fundraising efforts. As the teens themselves have told us many times, the Famine is a fun experience, but ultimately, the biggest impact is knowing that they have literally saved lives through the funds they raised.

Serving Him,

Kyle Jackson
SWO NYI Pres

SWO-NYI Board and Members

Dear Dr. Hanson, Dr. Jackson, SWO-NYI Board and Members,

It has been a year of  awe, deed and accomplishment.  I give all the praise and glory to God for all He has done through SWO/NYI.

NYI participated with Champions for Life Prison Ministry the last week-end in August.  In two days, 988 inmates made decisions for the Lord

Last year when the hurricanes hit multiple times, SWO-NYI took offerings and sent money to help.  This year many followed up by going to the devastation in Mississippi and giving a helping hand.  Xenia in the spring and a district group lead by Beavercreek has just returned.

Also just returning are the SWO/ NYI  that participated in the “One Heart Many Hands” mega working witness trip to Chiapas district in southern Mexico.

And I know many individual churches NYI groups did mission/working witness trips also.

For example; Living Hope sent two teams this year to Guatemala to work with Manuel and Cindy Batres.  Both teams spent 10 days in Guatemala working in the chapel factory and then went out into the field and constructed two churches.  The teams also held VBS for the local children and spent time with the people of the villages.

We are planned to have our four zones do Youthserve Days within their zones.

We are working with NMI to better facilitate our mission work.

To the youth and youth leaders of SWO, it is an honor and privilege to be associated with you. For I am the Missions Director, but I and mission are nothing with out you.  I speak, but you are the action in Missions. Thank you for serving God and His sheep.

Rev Walter “Santo” Landerer II.
SWO-NYI Missions Director

He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you."
He said to him, "Tend my sheep." (RSV)
